Tapping: Profit-Generator, Placebo or Worse

Overview

"The book details the current claims of Tapping Therapies drawn from the progenitors Roger J. Callahan (TFT), and Gary Craig (EFT), and their successor-businesses. Claims are perceived as extravagant particular in the fields of psychiatry/psychology and medical disorder cure/alleviation. A review of the literature reveals scant scientific study of the methods and their 'results' are measured against claims. Real science must be applied to determine veracity. Prospective Cohort and Longitudinal Study are directly applicable to any future Tapping Benefit research - and all must be assessed against quantifiers from Psychophysiological Methods, including event-related potentials (ERPs), physical/physiologic methods [e.g. blood pressure, pulse, core temperature etc.], brain waves, and advanced technology such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), MRI, PET, MEG, and/or other neuroimagery techniques. The author additionally addresses the relationship of Tapping Therapy to Acupressure and Traditional Chinese Medicine and defines Placebo Effects. The conclusion of the American Psychological Association that Tapping Therapy ""lacks a scientific basis."" Is considered at this time unassailable by this author with further consideration given the observations of Lilienfeld, Lynn & Lohr (2010) that this 'therapy' contains some of the hallmark indicators of a 'pseudoscience'. Tapping Practitioners' evasion of the peer review system and absence of boundary conditions is also noted. If Tapping is to be taken seriously by ANY medical therapist it must be PROVEN first, and today it is not. Acupressure/acupuncture are components of a much larger pantheon of treatments inside Traditional Chinese Medicine. Neither operate in isolation from the prescription of a comprehensive treatment plan for health complaints referred to qualified practitioners. Traditional Chinese Medicine has a 'pedigree' of application from the Shang Dynasty of China (circa 1400 BC). It still has a dramatic following today in the Sinosphere based on perceived successful 'medical outcomes'.Rather than parcelling a fractional element of one TCM tool [Acupressure] as Tapping 'therapists' claim to have done - by their accounts curing an astounding variety of health complaints - perhaps in contrast relying on the skills [and all the tools] of TCM qualified practitioners is to be preferred. Tapping has a chequered history of about 25 years, and the reader is counselled to consider this when deciding upon a health care course of action for any complaint."
