Tao Wisdom: Great Quotes from the Ancient Chinese Way of Virtue

Overview

He who boasts of what he will do, succeeds in nothing. – Tao Te Ching No understanding of Chinese civilization is possible without a grasp of Taoism, the philosophy that has shaped not just Chinese spirituality but also art, science and politics. And it was in the Tao Te Ching, written around 300BC, that the fundamental beliefs of Taoism were first gathered by the sage Laozi. This short book went on to influence Chinese philosophy, religion and politics for thousands of years afterwards. Beautifully produced in traditional Chinese binding, Tao Wisdom offers more than 80 succinct quotes from key Taoist figures, with advice on how to live a simple, peaceful and harmonious life, and how to rid oneself of desires and free society of institutions that promote greed.

Author Information

Lao Tzu, or Laozi, is an honorific title meaning 'Old Master', and it is unlikely that the Tao Te Ching or Daodejing was written by one person, but if he did exist, his name was Li Er. Traditionally written in the sixth century BCE, there are a number of ancient text sources that have been used to compile this version. Abbie Headon is a writer and editor who has worked across a wide range of publishing roles and genres, including self-help, popular science, memoir, fiction, and humour. Her books include Poetry First Aid Kit, The Power of Yes, LEGO Build Yourself Happy and The Periodic Table Illustrated. She is a Bookseller Rising Star and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and you can find her online at @abbieheadon.
