Tangles, Knots & Knaps: More than a bane of shame on a little black girl's mane to relax

Overview

Tangles, Knots and Knaps is a raw exploration of internal life changes and crises, and how the restructuring of our identity in response is universally evidenced through our hair. This poetry collection is symbolic, much like hair, of the many multi-faceted stages of our lives as girls, young ladies and full-grown mature women as we navigate our voice ind the midst of change and finally become heard. For women, and especially Black women, internal change and evidence of conflict may only be visible externally because we have changed our hairstyle (on purpose), our hair has fallen out (not on purpose), or we have no control over our style because we are at the mercy of other hands. The deeper exploration of poems details the acceptance and adjustment to each new life and hair stage, whether going from a natural style to a straightened style and loving who you are with it, or accepting the fate of a strained relationship and saying what the heck, and cutting your mane off to start from scratch. TKK delves into the heartbreak of loss, the discovery and molding of self, the strength found in resilience, and the transformative power of embracing an uncut, bared-to-the-bone identity. The poems echo the whispers of doubt, wail in grief, shout full-out defiance, and culminate in the ultimate song of self-acceptance that reverberate within a Black woman truly in acceptance of every kink, coil and tangle on her sacred head.
