Wordplay Teachers will find this a humorous read aloud to introduce and explain the use of cliches.-- Reading Today Online Trish and Faye are best buddies--you could even say that they are true blue friends, that they are thick as thieves. They're waiting around before the big Bonus Brothers concert, which will most likely knock their socks off. If you've seen your share of youth books on the English language, your assumptions are correct: each of these colorful phrases is illustrated literally to showcase their ridiculousness (Trish's socks flying off of her feet, for example). Info bubbles, meanwhile, provide explanations for phrases, distinctions between idioms and proverbs, and historical notes on usage. The story meanders (it's difficult to organize a coherent plot around bizarre phrases), but the overall effort is rescued by Watkins, whose watercolor and pen-and-ink illustrations feature the kind of wild-eyed, gape-mouthed kids that parents may remember from Dynamite magazine. The generous trim size also helps give this the zing of a book read entirely for pleasure. Other titles in the Ways to Say It series (You're Toast and Other Metaphors We Adore, 2011) look just as promising.-- Booklist Author InformationNancy Loewen writes fiction and nonfiction for children and young adults.
