Overview

This work takes a no-nonsense look at the sexual issues that many people wonder about, but do not know how to ask about. Selected letters from readers of a national women's magazine provide the basis for this easy-to-read book, which offers a wealth of information on a variety of sexual topics, including sexual physiology, relationships, problems with sexual functioning, and treatment approches. Dr Polonsky's straightforward style and his question-and-answer format enables the reader to thumb through the book and to focus only on those topics important to the reader at the time. Or the reader may choose to read the book from cover to cover for a complete sex re-education. Readers may even find themselves asking ""Why didn't they teach that in sex education?"". Although the book is not able to offer any magical cures, it does aim to offer a frank and open discussion about people's sexual lives - fears, the family, childhood sexual abuse, surgery and illness, and AIDS and sex. Although the book is written for adults, ""Talking about Sex"" provides parents with factual information they can use in communicating with their children about sex. The questions are from real-life. The doctor's answers are reassuring. Throughout the book, he puts a positive emphasis on healthy sexual development.

Reviews

This is a very useful book. Harvard-trained Dr. Polonsky speaks clearly and directly to the concerns of ordinary people. Talking about sex in an open and honest manner sets a good example for the best way to deal with many of life's 'everyday' problems. Responding to questions varying from the universal 'am I normal?' to the particular and the unique, Dr. Polonsky's answers are refreshingly direct, free of jargon, and immediately helpful. -- Michael Beldoch, Ph.D., Clinical Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Cornell University Medical College, Attending Psychologist, The New York Hospital, New York, New York Talking About Sex has it all: accurate information, readable style, honesty, sympathy for the reader's feelings, insight into the reader's concerns--a sex therapist tucked into a book like a genie in a lamp. -- Nada L. Stotland, M.D., Department of Psychiatry and Obstetrics/Gynecology, The University of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois This is a terrific book, written in easy, informal language for anyone who has ever wanted to learn more about sexuality. With warmth, acceptance, and wisdom, the author brings considerable clinical expertise to answer the many questions that arise in sexual relationships. -- Linda S. Austin, M.D., Associate Professor, Medical University of South Carolina, Department of Psychiatry, Charleston, South Carolina
