Table of ContentsReviewsAuthor InformationAlex Kelly is an SLT with nearly 30 years' experience of working with people who have difficulties with their social skills, self-esteem and their relationships. She is best known for being the author of the hugely popular TALKABOUT resources which are practical books to help staff to develop children's social skills. She left the NHS in 2009 and now runs her own business - Alex Kelly Ltd - jointly with her husband who was a teacher. They provide training and consultancy work, and speech and language therapy into over 30 local schools. They have also set up a new service in the UK called Speaking Space, which is a small Day Service for adults with learning disabilities and autism. She continues to develop resources on social skills and is currently researching the effectiveness of work in schools around the UK. She lectures internationally. Emily Dennis has worked in learning disability since 2008 in a variety of settings; residential, supported living, day services and special education. Within these she worked as a Communication Coordinator delivering training and implementing communication systems across Hampshire. This included projects around service user empowerment, enabling vulnerable adults to assertively make clear and informed choices about their lives. At university Emily studied Social Care and specialised in learning disability and relationships. This led her to see the need for good quality, accessible sex education and become passionate about creating a programme that would enable this. In 2015 Emily joined Alex Kelly Ltd where she works as a project lead in communication and relationships. She runs one to one courses and groups for young adults with learning disabilities and autism around friendships skills, social skills, body image and self-esteem. Sessions are individualised to the groups needs and use a total communication approach to ensure comprehension and retention of knowledge. Emily believes that work should be proactive; equipping people with the skills and knowledge to build happy and positive relationships and to keep themselves safe.
