In 1970 he moved to Neah Bay, Washington where he lived with his aunt and uncle. All through high school he continued to work as a deckhand on charter and commercial boats. At the age of fourteen Gary bought and fished a small commercial troller and fished off the coast of Washington for several years.He has been a licensed captain since 1980 having worked and fished in Washington and Alaska.
