After graduating from Virginia Tech in 1980, Colston spent eleven years as editor of The Hokie Huddler, Virginia Tech's official athletic newspaper. He then joined USA Today where he covered the NFL, NBA, and won first-place in the Pro Football Writers of America national writing contest.
