Taking the Matter into Common Hands maps out the issues surrounding collaborative art from a practitioner's perspective. With contributions from Marion von Osten, Nav Haq, 16 Beaver, Copenhagen Free University, Maria Lind and Lars Nilsson, it examines the working relations between artists and other producers of culture, and explores the future of collective action in the art world. In recent years, the art world has shown a renewed interest in collective work and activity. Collaborations between artists and artists, artists and curators, and artists and outside professionals have begun to rival the traditional focus on the individual artist. This type of collaboration has called into question how we view works of art that are not the voice of a single individual, and how that impacts on the concept of art as a means of self-expression. Johanna Billing is an artist who lives and works in Stockholm. Recent exhibitions include: Songs, Cities & Circles, Marabouparken, Stockholm 2006, Don Quijote, Witte de With, Rotterdam, 2006, 9th Istanbul Biennale, Istanbul, 2005, Normalization, Nova Gallery Zagreb/ Rooseum, Malmo 2004 - 5. Maria Lind has been the director of Iaspis since February 2005. She was formerly the director of Kunstverein München from 2002 - 4. From 1997 - 2001 she was curator at Moderna Museet in Stockholm and, in 1998, co-curator of Manifesta 2, Europe's biennale of contemporary art. Lind has contributed widely to magazines including Index, Site, Frieze, Art Monthly and Parkett, as well as to numerous catalogues and other publications. Lars Nilsson is an artist and writer based in Gothenburg working with issues around entrepreneurship, employment and happiness. Recent exhibitions and screenings include Hyper Commercial at Stockholm Art Fair, Onedotzero at Moderna Museet, Natural State at Zero1/Hangar Barcelona, and touring video showcase BLICK 04.
