Overview

A fascinating perspective of the racing industry, one you're not likely to find anywhere else, a unique look at life from the backstretch of the racetrack in the 1970's. With characters such as Magpie and Capitan, Fourfoot and Duck, it's hard sometimes to separate the humans from the horses. The male-dominated backstretch of the seventies was riskyat the best of times. It was more than a little challenging for the young women who were just beginning to find work as grooms and exercise riders. Janice Gannon, 20 and fresh out of college, found her home there; a place where misfits, misogynists, petty criminals and horse-crazy girls could all be accepted. Only a few hoof beats away from disaster, she learned to care for the quirky high maintenance thoroughbreds of the track whose colourful personalities permeate each story while discovering a less savoury side of the industry. ...along the way, Janice learned much about herself and life, and weaves the story of surviving an abusive relationship.

Author Information

Janice Gannon is an accomplished horsewoman and riding instructor who has more than forty years experience in the industry. She began her lifelong love affair with horses as a child and later graduated from Humber College's School of Horsemanship. An early job in the horse industry took her to the racetrack where she dived into the little known world of the backstretch, grooming and exercising horses, working on various racetracks through Canada and the United States. She saw the best and worst of horse care, determining for herself the essence of good horsemanship. As with people, she discovered that adapting to the individual quirks and characteristics of horses was more likely to lead to a successful partnership. And succeed she did, helping to bring more than a few sour or difficult horses around to the winner's circle. Ten years later, after working with a wide variety of human and equine characters, she moved on to successfully showing her own horses, and schooling others in an empathetic approach to riding and training. After earning coaching certificates in both English and Western riding, she developed a unique style of teaching that focuses on the partnership between rider and horse. Her students value her approach of schooling horse and human together to become a smooth and happy unit. Tales from the Track is her first book.
