OverviewThis novel is inspired by the Sze and P hexagrams of the I Ching. In ancient China, a young soldier named Li joins the army, hoping to prove himself and grow in the process. He is assigned to a team of elder and experienced soldiers who know better how to deal with situations. Their persistence inspires Li to work as a team and learn from their wisdom. Together, they set out on a mission to defend their kingdom against invaders. As they march forward, they encounter various challenges that test their resolve. Li observes his elder comrades going forth according to the rules, with firmness and correctness. They lead the army with great skill and inspire confidence in their subordinates. However, Li also notices that some leaders are inefficient, which could lead to disaster. Despite these challenges, the army continues to move forward. Soon, they find themselves in the midst of a battle, with Li's leader at the center of the action. The king has thrice conveyed orders of favor to him, indicating that he is the one proper leader of the host. Li witnesses this with admiration and awe. As the conflict rises, Li sees how his comrades must maintain their firm correctness and avoid error. They must adhere to the rules of righteous warfare and conduct themselves properly, especially at the outset. Li realizes that they are fighting for a just cause and that their success will bring good fortune. However, Li also observes how some soldiers are inefficient or idle, which could lead to evil. He sees how retreat may be necessary in certain circumstances, and how defensive war is often the only right course of action. Li learns that only the oldest son should lead the host, and younger men should not be allowed to share command. As the battle rages on, Li witnesses many twists and turns. He sees how birds in the fields symbolize parties attacking for plunder, and how it will be advantageous to seize and destroy them. He also learns that small men should not be employed in positions of power. Despite these challenges, Li's leader persists with great skill and determination. He delivers his charges, appointing some to be rulers of states and others to undertake the headship of clans. However, he warns that small men should not be employed in such positions. In the end, Li's team emerges victorious. They have defended their kingdom with honor and distinction. Li has grown in the process, learning from his elder comrades and gaining valuable experience. He understands the importance of working as a team and adhering to the rules of righteous warfare. Li has become a skilled soldier, ready to face any challenge that comes his way.
