Overview

Maggie isn’t your typical comic book, cartoon, and action movie fangirl. Through keen observation and unbending determination, she has taught herself all the death-defying stunts and fighting styles of her favorite action stars and superheroes! Unfortunately, Maggie has kept her eccentric hobby to herself, ever since it earned her the label of “nerd” among her classmates. After all, superheroes and evil villains are all kid stuff... right? WRONG! On the eve of her first day of high school, Maggie has a run-in with an evil mercenary group known as the Numbers. After years of training, it’s up to Maggie to be the self-taught superhero the city needs! But is she truly ready for the responsibility that comes with the title of “hero”? The situation escalates further when her secret crime-fighting life is discovered by one of her classmates! Can Maggie save her city and maintain a normal high school life all on her own?

FOREWORD (STARRED) -- Steven Petrivelli and Sean Dillon's charming Sweetie is a delightful tale about a self-made superhero told through dynamic and unique art. In a world filled to the brim with superheroes, headstrong Maggie wants nothing more than to be one of them. But when she finally reaches her goal, it's not completely what she hoped for. Through her hard work, study of kung-fu movies, and martial arts practice, Maggie eventually reaches the level of superhero. Nicknamed Sweetie by her parents, she tries to balance her personal life with her extracurricular crime fighting, though it isn't all as easy as she thought it would be. Her parents are stressed about Maggie putting herself in danger, she doesn't have many friends, and sometimes the bad guys just don't know when to give up. Despite her struggles, Sweetie is an upbeat story that values friendships, connections, and becoming what you want to be despite the obstacles.

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY -- In this collected volume, brown-skinned Maggie, called Sweetie by her parents, seems like a normal everyday fangirl with a love for all things cartoon, comics, and action movies. But Maggie has been learning every stunt and fighting style she can, making her into a deeply effective superhero. This comes in handy when a villain group known as the Numbers attacks her local mall, where she's buying comics. She aims to keep her hobbies a secret, but this proves difficult after she rescues a classmate kidnapped during the debacle. And on top of that, the Numbers are not so forgiving about having a little girl single-handedly stymie their gang. The plot is well-paced and the characters are sufficiently likable, but the real appeal is the rose and lavender visuals, which mix the vibrancy of superhero comics with a modern style. Subtle nods to classic superheroes and pop culture will appeal to fellow comics fanatics, and readers will root for this seemingly disarming superhero whose power is her deep dedication to her fandom.
