OverviewSuvak's First Fish tells the tale of a young boy faced with a tough choice. On a windy spring day, Suvak and his big sister Nauyaq decide to venture out on the frozen ocean of Arctic Alaska. While ice-fishing Suvak catches the biggest fish he's ever seen. Suvak must decide whether to follow his people's cultural tradition of sharing their first catch with their community, or keep the giant fish all to himself. This story, written and illustrated by Native Alaskan Iñupiat (and a pair of siblings!), explores themes of sibling bonds, community, sharing, cultural values, and Indigenous Iñupiaq traditions.
