Abstract: Sustainable Urban Revitalization: Attractiveness and Significance of Sai Kung Town ABSTRACT With the pace of urban development in Sai Kung Town, it is developed as a leisure and recreational place with renowned seafood restaurants. The image of fishing village and cultural heritage in Sai Kung Old Town, which are important elements to present the local distinctiveness of Sai Kung, are deteriorated gradually. The condition of streets and alleys, and village houses in the Old Town are deteriorating and not compatible with the other parts of Sai Kung Town. To boost the local community economy, the main component is to develop tourism with a better business and living environment. Through a comprehensive urban design, Sai Kung Town can be revitalized to attract more business investments and tourism, provide more cultural opportunities, improve the environment with the use of public transportation and support local economies. Tourism can potentially act as catalyst for sustainable urban revitalization in Sai Kung. The aims of this thesis is to revitalize the Old Town through preservation and adaptive re-use of its historic and vernacular characteristics with strong cultural heritage, injection of economic and cultural activities along the alleys and improvement of the living conditions for local residents so that the Old Town plays a more active role in the district; to enhance and utilize resources along the waterfront of Sai Kung Town with diverse activities; to create and strengthen physical and visual connections between different areas; and to balance the needs and aspiration of locals and visitors. Overseas case studies of successful urban revitalization developments and relevant literature are investigated to arrive a comprehensive urban design guideline and framework. Urban design proposal is recommended for Sai Kung Town based on urban context analysis in response to its opportunities and local character. Revitalization of Sai Kung Town will not only enhance the physical environment quality, it will also improve the economic environment. It will provide small business opportunity for local residents and a sense of place and vitality.
