His first degree was in Agricultural Engineering, from the Valle University in Cali. He has studied at the International Experimentation Centre (CEDEX) in Madrid, and obtained a diploma in Hydraulic Engineering from UNESCO-IHE Delft in 1995. He currently lectures at the Environment and Natural Resources School at Valle University in areas such as fluid mechanics, applied hydraulics, irrigation and drainage.
