Suspected Hippie in Transit: More Sex, Dope, Cheap Thrills, and Hard Truths in South and East Asia

Overview

An unbridled celebration of free spirit What was it like to backpack along the international hippie trail fifty years ago? Martin Frumkin's pre-tech, countercultural rucksack romp throughout Asia captures the tumultuous, don't-give-a-damn attitude of such rebellious, nomadic vagabonds as Marco Polo, Ibn Battalu, and Neal Cassady. Martin ""tuned in"" and ""turned on,"" but chose not to ""drop out."" In volume 2, Martin continues his quest for ""truth, justice, and any way"" while immersed in Southeast Asia and the Orient. Avoiding the Burmese junta among Mandalayan-jeweled pagodas, our anti-hero unwittingly flirts with the ""Serpent"" in Bangkok. Personal discovery of wondrous indigenous subcultures, and temples, beaches, and volcanoes of Java, Bali, and Sumatra morph into the backstreets and Buddhist monasteries of free Hong Kong and Macau. After falling in love in the shadows of the Taiwanese alps, he searches for old Korea under its modern veneer--interrupted by ""quick time"" measured by the almighty mamazon who watches over her courtesans. Not knowing the laws, values, and mores of foreign cultures, nor bound to those at home, Martin experienced an inexplicable, free-floating freedom. Written in journal form, Suspected Hippie in Transit will empower you to ""wake up"" and change your life.

Author Information

MARTIN FRUMKIN, born a boomer in Lower Manhattan in 1948, escaped middle-class morality and malaise in his travels throughout North America, Europe, Asia, and South America. His journals became his compass--a guru of sorts--often in conflict with his own attempts at self--discovery while wrestling with God. Five years of open-ended, spontaneous backpack travel morphed into a career in the trenches of psychiatric social work. First called ""Don Martín"" by fishermen in the Canary Islands, and later by friends and enemies, he lives with his wife in Colorado. Website: suspectedhippie.com.
