Table of ContentsReviewsMichael Fisher's book is the work of a rare sort of specialist--a physician who treats not organs but human beings, who sees disease and health not in narrowly physiological terms but as manifestations of the mind/body unity long taught by ancient wisdom and eloquently proven by modern science. Written with a welcome combination of expertise, passion and humanity, this volume will be a valuable guide to living and thriving with kidney disease for patients, their families and their clinicians--indeed, for anyone interested in the prevention of renal disease. Gabor Mat M.D. Author of When The Body Says No: Exploring the Stress/Disease Connection Highly recommended. Should be read by anyone who wants to hear about illness preventing life-style changes, including the role of stress and it's effect on our autoimmunology, and the importance of looking at obesity in preventing diabetes (and future kidney disease) in one's self. I work with chronically ill patients, and this book taught me in an easy way that I could not have managed with a medical textbook about the nature of kidney disease, the process of ongoing treatment, transplantation, and more. The book teaches in detail without being dense. Surviving Kidney Disease is extremely readable and wide-ranging, and has implications for a number of other chronic medical problems. It takes a very human approach by talking through the eyes of a dozen patients. The author is transparent about his own medical journey with life threatening cancer, which drew me in even closer to his book. I was also impressed with the several sections written in Spanish clearly trying to reach an important audience with a message about obesity, diabetes, and kidney disease. I plan on sharing this title with several of my patients who are feeling very burdened by their illness, as well as some younger ones who are struggling with their weight and need to make some life-style changes before diabetes and/or kidney illness comes their way. -- Amazon review From his own serious illness, Dr. Michael Fisher emerged an inspiring communicator whose passion for patient care far exceeds the norm. This book captures not only the hope, grit, and courage it takes to overcome kidney disease, but illuminates a path to prevention and wellness that can help forestall or prevent a range of infirmities. I strongly recommend it for patients and caregivers alike.
