Reviews

“Letting go was the hardest thing I’ve ever done as a leader -- and the most liberating. Once I finally stopped micromanaging every corner of my business, everything opened up: more freedom, more creativity, more growth. Surrender to Lead nails it. The Results Equation aligns perfectly with The Let Them Theory: trust people, create the conditions, and let them rise. That’s where real leadership begins.” -- Mel Robbins, New York Times bestselling author and host of The Mel Robbins Podcast “Surrender to Lead flips the traditional script on leadership -- and that’s exactly why it’s so powerful. With courage and clarity, Jessica and Joe reveal how our obsession with control can hold us back from the very growth we seek. Their personal stories and research make a compelling case for letting go -- not of standards or ambition but of the illusion that we can force success. If you’re ready to stop gripping tighter and start leading with greater impact, this is the guide you’ve been waiting for.” -- Dr. Marshall Goldsmith, Thinkers50 #1 executive coach and New York Times bestselling author of The Earned Life, Triggers, and What Got You Here Won’t Get You There “Surrender to Lead is truly different from other leadership books. Jessica and Joe have taken a counterintuitive approach to finding what works for leaders and to challenging conventional thinking, and they’ve laid out a distinct path to getting results and finding new ways to win. ‘Surrendering’ isn’t something to be feared by those in leadership positions; rather, this book makes clear it’s what effective leaders do to ensure success for their companies and everyone around them. -- Billy Beane, senior advisor to the managing partner, Oakland Athletics, and subject of the bestselling book and Oscar-nominated movie Moneyball “Surrender to Lead is a wonderful, paradigm-shifting book that challenges the illusion of control and shows how true leadership is found in trust, authenticity, and creating the right conditions for people to thrive. Jessica Kriegel and Joe Terry offer a compelling framework for moving from force to flow in unlocking greater results by focusing on belief, culture, and empowerment. This is a timely and transformative guide for leaders ready to elevate others and achieve outstanding outcomes.” -- Stephen M. R. Covey, New York Times and #1 Wall Street Journal bestselling author of The Speed of Trust and Trust & Inspire “Surrender to Lead is a powerful invitation to rethink what true leadership looks like. Jessica Kriegel and Joe Terry challenge the myth of control and offer a smarter, more human path forward -- one rooted in trust, clarity, and purpose. Their message is timely, urgent, and exactly what today’s workplace leaders need to hear.” -- Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., SHRM-SCP, president and CEO, Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM), and Wall Street Journal bestselling author of Reset “Surrender to Lead captures what I’ve felt my whole career but couldn’t name -- the paradox that the more you try to control people, the less they give you their best. Jessica Kriegel and Joe Terry show how letting go -- trusting your teams and focusing on purpose -- unlocks extraordinary results. Every leader who cares about people and performance needs this book.” -- Kelli Valade, CEO, Denny’s “Surrender to Lead dismantles the illusion of control and invites leaders to embrace humility, trust, and love as catalysts for powerful transformation. With rigor and heart, Jessica Kriegel and Joe Terry propose a courageous redefinition of leadership that puts people first and proves that human-centered cultures are more fulfilling and effective.” -- Hubert Joly, former CEO, Best Buy; senior lecturer, Harvard Business School; and bestselling author of The Heart of Business “The root cause of workplace drama is the belief that we can control everything and everyone. Jessica and Joe expose that myth with honesty and precision -- and then give us the tools to lead with presence instead of pressure. This book is a manual for ditching the ego and choosing accountability over anxiety.” -- Cy Wakeman, New York Times bestselling author and founder of Reality-Based Leadership “As a pro athlete and mom, I’ve chased the illusion of control -- only to discover that peace and clarity live in the art of getting comfortable with discomfort. Surrender to Lead isn’t just a book -- it’s the voice in your head when the road feels longest, the toughest, the hardest, and when the finish line seems impossible. It’s a reminder that true strength is forged in discomfort, that courage lives in surrender, and that the unknown isn’t something to fear but a place where timeless resilience is born. This is the guide that meets you in your darkest mile . . . and carries you through with power, fortitude, stamina, and endless grit.” -- Meredith Kessler, 11-time Ironman champion, 23-time Ironman 70.3 champion, and voted greatest American female triathlete “With everything leaders are up against today, Jessica Kriegel and Joe Terry show us the answer isn’t tight control -- it’s learning to let go. Surrender to Lead offers the clarity and trust we need to create conditions where everyone can thrive, which is how leaders build something that truly lasts for themselves and the people counting on them.” -- Jim McCann, founder and chairman, 1-800-Flowers.com “Trust powers great leadership. As a CEO, trust has always been a cornerstone of my leadership philosophy -- the magic glue that holds together personal and professional relationships. Surrender to Lead explores why control doesn’t scale but trust does. A must-read for leaders ready to embrace this approach to achieve exceptional outcomes.” -- Aron Ain, executive chair, UKG, and author of WorkInspired “Jessica and Joe have captured my very own early style of leadership and management. For years I was successful because I was brutally organized and would hold people accountable through intimidation and my foolproof system of accountability -- because of my own insecurity. Accomplishment and praise from others were my drugs of choice. I got things done but left lots of bodies in my wake. In my mid-30s, I realized my mistaken belief that control was the way and that I needed to change. The last half of my career, I just hired great people, trusted them, and set them up for success. It was hard at first, but I slowly was able to totally let go -- then my career and results soared, as well as my marriage. I wish I’d had this book way back when I started out.”-- Lee Cockerell, former executive vice president, Walt Disney World® Resort, and author of Creating Magic “What if the gateway to real leadership accountability, enhanced performance, and growth means embracing the opposite of what we’ve long been taught to believe? That’s the intriguing premise of Surrender to Lead, a powerful wake-up call for leaders addicted to control. Through courageous storytelling and simple, powerful ideas, Jessica Kriegel and Joe Terry show how surrender isn’t weakness but the path to a new set of answers in today’s uncertain world. If you want to build a culture where clarity, accountability, and trust replace control, exhaustion, and fear -- read this book. But more than that, surrender to it.”  -- Jean Gomes, New York Times bestselling author; founder of Outside Consulting; and Professor of Practice, UCL Global Business School for Health “Creating a culture of accountability within our agency is not merely an initiative; it is essential to our mission of protecting Georgians. The insights and methodologies we embraced from the Surrender to Lead have provided us with the clarity and alignment necessary to begin to transform our agency into a certified great place to work. This collective commitment not only enhances our operational effectiveness but also strengthens our resolve to serve our communities with integrity and excellence.” -- Tyrone Oliver, commissioner, Georgia Department of Corrections “I spent decades learning how to get the best out of my players, and in the era I played, the coach was in control -- that was their job. However, real leadership isn’t about control -- it’s about care. Great leaders let go of ego, create connection, and put the team first. My whole philosophy was to hand control over to the team. How do you surrender, and -- more importantly -- how do you systemize surrender while not abdicating your responsibility as a coach or leader? The result of this counterintuitive approach was our (the Sydney Swans’) first Premiership in seventy-two years. In Surrender to Lead, Joe and Jessica outline the system for building winning teams.” -- Paul Roos, 2005 Australian Sports Coach of the Year, former AFL superstar, and Australian Hall of Fame member “If you’re tired of white-knuckling your way through leadership, Surrender to Lead is your permission slip to breathe. It doesn’t preach. It activates growth and momentum, on your terms. This is the kind of book that makes you want to show up differently on Monday -- and every day after -- ready to win.” -- Paul Epstein, former NFL and NBA executive, two-time bestselling author, and founder of WIN MONDAY™ “With a million leadership books in print, the obvious question would be, is there room for another one? The answer is, ‘Yes, if it adds value and stands out among the many.’ This book does, for four major reasons: 1. It focuses on results. Most leadership books don’t. They focus on behavior.; 2. It’s based on a tremendous amount of research and, more importantly, practice. It shows what has worked in organizations.; 3. In simple ways, it breaks down the complexities of great leadership into key actions to take. 4. Because culture is probably THE most important issue for organizations, it shows how the leader is essentially a catalyst for making culture work. This book is an indispensable guide for any leader wanting to make a difference in terms that are meaningful to the top executives of the organization.” -- Jack J. Phillips, PhD, chairman, ROI Institute; former bank president; and author of more than a hundred books
