OverviewAll physicians enjoy their Internship year, believe it or not! The knowledge gleaned from patients, the discourse with consultants: and the input of Staff Physicians help mold an Intern's diagnostic ability. Interns have a lot of book learning, but very little experience. An Intern is expected to function on very little sleep; deal with challenging health and social issues; and maintain an optimistic outlook on life. A successful Intern rationally deals with a patient's issues; always remains positive; does everything humanly possible to treat a patient's problem(s); and above all, the Intern must be realistic. Patients will die despite all the efforts of the Interns and the medical team. And unfortunately, that's life and an Intern must accept that fact. Interns are a rare breed. They enjoy their interactions with patients, and they attempt to have a positive outlook on life at all times. Interns like to laugh and they can find humor in almost every facet of the practice of medicine. Their funny antics and the situations they get themselves into is the basis for the writing of, Surgical Internship: An Experience of a Lifetime.
