OverviewThis work examines: the need for social support to enable the successful reintegration of homeless people into mainstream housing; the provision of supported housing in the EU countries; the problems and issues involved in the provision of support and housing. The report draws on the 1999 national reports of the correspondents of the European Observatory on Homelessness who conduct research on behalf of FEANTSA (the European Federation of National Organizations Working with the Homeless). The study explores the development of designated ""supported accommodation"", and other social support mechanisms for vulnerable people in the EU countries since the early 1980s. The authors consider the principles underlying the emergence of supported housing and describes the policy context of care services in the EU. The definition, emergence and nature of support in housing in the 15 member states is also explored. The authors conclude by highlighting the problems, issues and dilemmas in the pursuit of supported housing policies and in the implementation of those policies. Hugh Bochel, Department of Policy Studies, University of Lincolnshire and Humberside Over the last decade, supporting housing schemes have grown, offering better quality of life and integration into society for diverse vulnerable groups - such as homeless people, those with mental health problems or learning difficulties and vulnerable young people. This growth has been largely unnoticed. Using original material throughout the European Union, this important book sets out and critically analyses different approaches, different types of support and different client groups. This is essential reading for anyone concerned with community care, social exclusion, homelessness, control or empowerment - in a national or international context.
