Supervisory Relationships: Exploring the Human Element

Overview

An ideal supplemental textbook for classes in any professional program that trains psychotherapists and a valuable resource for working professionals. This reissued classic teaches supervisors and supervisees to anticipate the workplace issues they may face and provides them with valuable insights about what goes on in the clinical supervisory relationship. Because such a range of real-life situations are presented, readers reap the benefit of being confronted with workplace situations it might take them years to run across. The diverse vignettes, drawn from clinical practice in a variety of settings, lend a powerful dynamic to this practical book and provide a departure point for discussion or even debate about sensitive issues. The video, Challenges in Cross Cultural Supervision, created by Kaiser and her colleagues Carol Kuechler and Angeline Barretta Herman, is based on the concepts in this book and is available on YouTube.

Reviews

Twenty-five years and hundreds of other articles and books on supervision have in no way supplanted the messages in this book... a unique contribution of great value to everyone from an experienced supervisor to a trainee. ...It was ahead of its time in addressing race and cultural issues. -Gary R. Schoener, MEq, director of the Institute for Consultation and Training, Walk-In Counseling Center, Minneapolis, MN and international expert in clinical ethics and supervision I have taught a class in supervision and program management for 10 years. This book is one of the primary texts for the course and one that students consistently rate highly. I have also found the book's concepts very useful in the training and consultation that I offer for professionals and organizations. -Jane Hurley-Johncox MSW LICSW, Clinical Faculty, Morrison Family College of Health, School of Social Work, University of St. Thomas This book is most helpful when Kaiser addresses the difficult, often taboo issues related to the impact of race and other cultural influences. The book is strengthened by her providing case examples of supervisory relationships, both positive and negative, that illustrate her theoretical model. -Lawrence Shulman, MSW ED, author of Interactional Supervision, Supervision and Counseling, and Teaching the Helping Skills: A Field Instructor's Guide and author of the section on supervision and consultation and the section on supervision and consultation in The Encyclopedia of Social Work (NASW Press/Oxford). This clearly written, carefully organized book recognizes the complex ways that the supervisory relationship underpins the learning and provides a user-friendly framework for in-depth consideration of both helpful and potentially troublesome elements. . . . Dr. Kaiser's selection of vignettes reflects an exceptional grasp of the minefields to be anticipated and, ideally, to be re-navigated with curiosity, caring, empathy. -Margot Aronson, LICSW, deputy director of Policy and Practice, Clinical Social Work Association
