Overview

"""Super Special Sisters: A Story About the Miracle of In Vitro Fertilization"" is a picture story for young readers in Grade One to Grade Five. It is based upon the author's real-life experience of conceiving a baby through in vitro fertilization. The narrator is a seven-year-old boy who tells the story of the birth of his twin sisters, Sarah and Juliet. Jackson explains that when he asked his parents for a baby brother or sister, they told him that they had to get help from a doctor at a special clinic to get pregnant. As the story develops, Jackson shares the family's emotional experiences in candid and natural language. The author's intent is to present a realistic depiction of events that is simple enough for a young child to understand. The story also introduces the idea of adoption as an option, but in the end the family's fourth and final attempt at in vitro fertilization is successful. The excitement of the pregnancy is shared by Jackson's parents and his Grandmother as they discover that they are expecting twin girls in their family. A year after the birth of the twins, Jackson reflects that, ""Sometimes it's not easy being a big brother to my super special sisters, but most of the time it's just great!"" ""Super Special Sisters: A Story About the Medical Miracle of In Vitro Fertilization"" is designed to present factual information to a child in a reassuring manner. This story would prove very useful in explaining what could be a difficult topic. It will touch the hearts of all families who have suffered from infertility or secondary infertility. It is also an extremely useful learning resource for primary teachers who are teaching their students about families and the many different ways that families are created. The glossary and frequently asked questions at the end of the book are particularly helpful."
