Reviews

Memorization does not come easy for some, especially in the area of geography. Places can easily become a jumble of names without the ability to connect them. Cleary uses mnemonic devices, using techniques such as music, acrostics, grouping, and imagery. The book is divided into two sections, locally and globally. In the local section the focus is on the United States: the continent, thirteen colonies, ten largest cities, regions of the United States, and population. The global section looks at the oceans, the different continents, and navigation. In each section there is a mixed-up word section in which students can unscramble the words to find the answer to a riddle. At the end of each section a map shows more information about the area. Simplistic and humorous watercolor drawings illustrate the information being learned. Providing students with resources in learning how to develop study skills is important to a library collection and this book is one that will enable students to transfer this to other content areas. Recommended. --Library Media Connection
