Sunday Sundaes

Overview

Enjoy a sprinkle of happy with this fun, sweet series from the author of the Cupcake Diaries series! Meet the Sunday Sundae Sisters! Allie, Sierra, and Tamiko have been best friends since kindergarten. Now Allie’s parents are divorced and Allie has moved one town away. She can still see her friends but she no longer goes to the same middle school. So that means new teachers, new classrooms, and new students to deal with—all without her BFFs for support. But when Allie’s mom decides to fulfill her lifelong dream and open up an ice cream shop, Allie has an idea. Maybe she and her friends can work in the shop every Sunday! It’s a way for them to stay in touch every week and have fun—that is, of course, until they actually start working. The girls soon discover that working in an ice cream shop is more than just scooping cones and adding toppings. It’s serious work and Allie feels the pressure of having to “be the boss” around her friends. Can the girls work together every week and still remain BFFs? They can—especially when they settle their differences over an ice cream cone. Written by Coco Simon, author of the popular Cupcake Diaries series, this yummy new middle grade series for girls will have the same sweet wholesome fun both girls and parents crave. It’s sure to be another delicious hit!

Reviews

Allie arrives home from camp to find out that her parents are getting divorced, she's moving and must attend a new school, and her mom is opening up an ice cream store. The ice cream store isn't so bad, but a new school means leaving her best friends, Sierra and Tamiko, and no longer being in charge of Book Fest. Allie isn't happy. On the first day of school, three mean girls target her, and the rocky transition is further complicated by her feelings of jealousy that Sierra is running the Book Fest and that Tamiko and Sierra have made a new friend. With the successful opening of the ice cream shop and some new pals, Allie finds a way to stand up to the mean girls and see Sierra and Tamiko every week. A cat named Diana (after Anne Shirley's best friend) and other literary references are sprinkled throughout, which renders this title tailor-made for book lovers. Written by the author of the popular Cupcake Diaries books, this is the first entry in a new series. Allie's feelings towards the changes in her life and her best friends' new friend are relatable and realistic. VERDICT Purchase for collections aimed at reluctant readers, where light-hearted realism is in demand and where the Cupcake Diaries are popular.-Kefira Phillipe, Nichols Middle School, Evanston, IL * School Library Journal *
