Overview

Although the Islamic Republic of Iran is not entirely absent from the media, it remains unfamiliar territory for many people in the West. Some believe that Iran is one of the Arab states, while others, who have realised that it is an Islamic but not an Arab country, are also divided into two groups when it comes to forming an opinion about Iranian society. Some say that the Iranian people are conservative but hospitable, with interesting customs, while others say that Iranians are very cosmopolitan and liberal due to their history and suffer under a despotic government. However, the truth lies neither with the former nor with the latter, nor anywhere in between. This is because Iranian social structure and mentality are far too complex to be described in one or two sentences. This becomes apparent when one considers the issue of suicide in Iran.
