Palmore, a noted gerontologist, points out in the foreword that gerontology--the study of the process of aging--has come into its own as an academic discipline only within the last few decades. Suicide, however, has been studied for a long time. ... Since both fields spring from multidisciplinary literatures, a survey of this subspecialty is extremely difficult. This bibliography is divided into a 36-page literature review, an annotated list of bibliographical sources, fairly lengthy descriptions of empirical studies, and a list of non-English works, some of which are annotated. The demographic appendix contains sources for official data, tables, and figures; there are also subject and author indexes. The compilers, both experts in the field, have arranged the material in a way that makes it useful to scholars and researchers. The annotations are well written and long enough to provide ample information and the literature review provides an excellent overview of the subject. Invaluable to researchers interested in the many complex questions raised by suicide among the elderly, and an excellent resource for others who want only a few articles on the subject.?-Choice
