OverviewThe Rawshaniyya, who flourished in the traditional homeland of the Pashtuns in the Kabul/Indus basin in the sixteenth-seventeenth centuries, were a powerful religio-political millenarian movement whose influence was greatly feared by the rulers of Mughal India. Drawing on a wide range of previously neglected sources, Andreyev examines the history of this movement in the broader context of tribal politics and opposition to contemporary Muslim authorities. Its emphasis on esoteric knowledge disseminated by the 'Perfect Guide' and its relationship to the Uwaysi Sufi tradition are discussed in depth. The extensive corpus of Rawshani writings, which bear the imprint of the Indo-Persian tradition, are examined in the context of early Pashtun literature.
