OverviewThe book of Ruth (Hebrew: מגילת רות, Megilath Ruth), commonly abbreviated as Ruth, is one of the books of the third division of the Hebrew Bible (Ketuvim). In the case of the Christian Bible, it is the eighth book of the Old Testament and is treated as one of the historical books, placed between Judges and I Samuel, because its events occur during the time when the judges were judging. Its name is a reference to the main character in the story, Ruth, David's great-grandmother.The book tells how Ruth accepted the God of the Israelites as her God and the Israelites as her people. In Ruth 1:16-17, he said to Naomi, his Israelite mother-in-law, ""Wherever you go, I will go; and wherever you land, I will land; your people shall be my people, and your God, my God."" ""Wherever you die, I will die, and there I will be buried."" This is what the Lord is preparing for me, and more, if not death will keep me from You."" This is a book much loved by Jews by choice, as the remarkable presence of Boaz in rabbinic literature reveals. The book of Ruth is one of the five megillot and is read during the Jewish festival of Shavuot (""Weeks"").
