Author Information

Clint Smoke is a retired member and former chair of the National Science Curriculum Committee for Associate Curriculum Development, and the former editor of Fire Command magazine. He is a member of the National Fire Protection Association, and is a Director and Secretary for the Fire Protection Technology Educations Section of NFPA, as well as a member of the International Society of Fire Service Instructors. Professor Smoke was an early and active participant in the Fire and Emergency Service Higher Education (FESHE) Conference held annually at the National Fire Academy, and was the first chairman of the FESHE National Fire Science Curriculum Committee. A Certified Fire Protection Specialist, he is currently the chair of the Fire Protection Technology Program at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College in Asheville, North Carolina, and a member of the Skyland Volunteer Fire Department. Billy Jack Wenzel is a 29-year veteran of the Wichita Fire Department, currently serving as the Division Chief of Safety and Training. Chief Wenzel worked through the ranks as Firefighter, Lieutenant, and Captain, earning multiple awards and letters of recognition. He worked as Captain at one of Wichita's busiest houses and spent time as a member of Special Operations. He holds certifications in many areas including: Hazardous Materials Technician, High Angle Rescue, Trench Rescue, N.A.U.I. SCUBA, Confined Space Rescue, Advanced Crash Rescue, and holds a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration. Chief Wenzel spent 19 years as a member of the Wichita Fire Department Honor Guard and served as the Unit Commander. Chief Wenzel is the author of Kansas Grain Dust Explosion and Training Tips for Fire Engineering. He has been published in several fire service trade publications. Chief Wenzel is an adjunct instructor for the National Fire Academy, Department of Homeland Security, Emergency Management Institute, National Fallen Firefighter Foundation, and a past instructor at FDIC. He is a Training Manager for the University of Kansas Fire and Rescue Training Institute. He is the co-developer of Wichita HoT, a regional fire school providing affordable hands-on-training to hundreds of firefighters every year. Chief Wenzel is a member of the Kansas Firefighters Association Training Committee, Kansas Historical Museum, and the South Central Kansas Incident Management Team. Chief Wenzel has been married to his wife, Sheri, for 21 years and has three children, Anna, Jacob, and Jared. Bradford Boyd is a 16-year veteran of the Wichita Fire Department, currently serving as the Medical Officer in the Safety/Training Division. Captain Boyd worked through the ranks as Firefighter, Lieutenant, and Captain, earning multiple awards and letters of recognition. He currently works as C Shift Medical Officer and spends time in the classroom delivering medical and firefighter safety courses. Captain Boyd is a national fire Instructor as well as a disaster medical adjunct instructor for Rescue Training Associates. Captain Boyd also is a NIMS 300-400 Instructor, NFA Emergency Incident Safety Officer Instructor, Kansas Board of Emergency Medical Instructor Coordinator, and is a National Registry Paramedic, and holds certifications in many other areas. Captain Boyd holds an Associate's Degree from Cowley County Community College and currently working on a Bachelors degree. Charlie Keeton served 35 years on the Wichita Fire Department where he rose through the ranks to serve as the Chief Training/Safety Officer. Charlie coordinated the in-service training provided to the personnel of the Fire Operations Division, including management and oversight of all fire, hazardous materials, medical and special operations training functions. Charlie also served as the Department's Safety Officer overseeing its accident and injury prevention programs. In addition, Charlie was the coordinator of the Department's Heavy Rescue Team as well as a Training Coordinator for the University of Kansas Fire and Rescue Training Institute. In 2008 Charlie was awarded the J. Faherty Casey Award for his activities in the National Fire Academy's Training Resource and Data Exchange (TRADE) program as well as the Insurance Women of Wichita Firefighter of the Year award in 2007. Charlie currently serves as the Emergency Preparedness Coordinator for hospitals within a 19 county area in South Central Kansas. Charlie is a Wichita native and has been married to his wife Dianna for over 33 years, has two children and four grandchildren.
