OverviewPublished by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geodynamics Series, Volume 26. Recent geophysical, geochemical and geological studies have led to a much improved understanding of the structure and evolution of the Australian continent from its Archaean nuclei to its present-day morphology. This new wealth of information has raised additional questions on the continent's geological past, and has led to the formulation of new hypotheses on continental growth and dynamics which will serve to inspire further investigations. This volume compiles the most current geological and geophysical data pertaining to the formation and evolution of the Australian continent through geological time. Although the main focus of this monograph is the structure and evolution of the Australian continent, many of the observations and interpretations are discussed in a global framework and are relevant for studies of other continents.
