Macdonald is currently Professor Emeritus of Architectural Structures at the Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, University of Edinburgh. He has served as Head of the Department of Architecture at the University of Edinburgh, as a Commissioner on the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland and as a member of the Board of Governors of Edinburgh College of Art.
