Overview

'It is better to be roughly right than precisely wrong.' John Maynard Keynes Engineering Structures is mostly formally taught in a lecture room with little time devoted to real examples. On graduation an engineer has to cope with turning this eagerly acquired knowledge into reality. To make sense of this a designer needs to be able to test their ideas with a simple set of tools which involve little more than pen, paper and calculator. Architects often wonder if there is an easier way to evaluate alternative structural solutions in their designs. For more information see www.struartapp.com

Reviews

As an architect in a design and build team, I'm always keen to develop my understanding of structural principles, without feeling isolated by overly-complex calculations. This book certainly satisfied in that respect, and the detail is there for those that wish to pursue further. Hugh sets out the importance of early structural input to achieve a successful project; to explore the core design principles from a functional, economic and aesthetic standpoint. Recommended as a comprehensive, refreshing read and reference source. W Harvey What every junior structural Engineer needs (can't speak for seniors as I'm at graduate level). I have bought a number of structural engineering books - this book, by far, was the most frequently used in my day-to-day tasks. The book contains practical knowledge, that once acquired, will assist in the daily tasks carried out in the office. Great book! D Zaid
