Strider's Mountain: Requiem for a Bad Man - Book Two of the Sierra Sunrise Series

Overview

This is a story about a family, first and last. It is set in the early 1900s, shortly after the end of World War I, in the wilderness of the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. The family consists of a father, an ex-Indian Marine sharpshooter; a mother, the sole survivor of a Mexican family devastated during the great Spanish Flu epidemic; a coming-of-age son; an adopted daughter; and ten-year-old twins, a boy and a girl. They have created a life of self-imposed isolation on a small island of freedom, high on a plateau above the clouds overlooking the Mojave Desert. William Strider stumbled upon this hidden paradise after being discharged from military service. He found himself adrift and confused in a sea of bias and disdain in a country that considered itself too ""civilized"" to allow surviving Native Americans to roam free on their ancestral lands. Those who refused to submit meekly to the confines of the reservations became outcasts in the land of their forefathers. The skills William had honed during the war came at a significant cost, leaving him with both physical scars and emotional burdens. He carried the guilt of having taken lives while simultaneously being viewed as a hero. He turned his skills into a profession, working for the Army as a manhunter. He subdued criminals, rescued the innocent, and retrieved the dead, all to support his family tucked away in their mountain hideaway. However, after being wounded at the hands of jealous assassins, William was unable to fulfill his role as the family's provider for several months. In his absence, his aging father, a relic of the Indian wars, and his eldest son, unbeknownst to their Army employers, stepped in to save the family from ruin. While their tasks mainly involved retrieving lost individuals and the deceased, things took a dangerous turn when they were assigned to track down a notorious killer. Suddenly, the hunters found themselves becoming the hunted. This is the story of adventure and tragedy as family members sacrifice all to come to the aid of their loved ones.
