Strictly Ballroom won the Prix de la Jeunesse for Best Film and was runner up in the Camera d'Or prize section at the 1992 Cannes Film Festival. It won Best Film of the Festival – Audience Vote at the Sydney, Melbourne and Toronto Film Festivals, and was nominated for thirteen AFI awards in Australia. The script won the NSW Premier’s Literary Award for Scriptwriting.

BAZ LUHRMANN is one of Australia's most recognisable creative forces. His most recent film is the extraordinary 3-D adaptation of F. The director's earlier films include the ambitious epic Australia (2008), starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman, the Oscar®-winning Moulin Rouge! (2001) featuring Kidman and Ewan McGregor, his boldly luminous version of William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet (1996), starring DiCaprio and Claire Danes, and the celebrated Strictly Ballroom (1992), starring Paul Mercurio and Tara Morice.Luhrmann is one of Australia's most imaginative and strikingly original opera directors. His production of La bohème on Broadway in 2002 was lauded by critics for its sensuality and glorious production design. It was nominated for seven Tony® Awards, including Best Revival and Best Director for Luhrmann. Luhrmann comes full circle to direct the stage musical adaptation of Strictly Ballroom at the Sydney Lyric in April 2014. CRAIG PEARCE co-wrote with Baz Luhrmann Strictly Ballroom, William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet, and Moulin Rouge!. These films have won countless accolades, including an Australian Film Institute award for best adapted screenplay (Strictly Ballroom), a BAFTA for best adapted screenplay (Romeo + Juliet), a WGA nomination for best original screenplay (Moulin Rouge!) and eight Academy Award nominations, including best film, (Moulin Rouge!). In 2010 Universal Studios released Pearce's adaptation of Charlie St Cloud starring Zac Efron. Pearce's most recent collaboration with Luhrmann, The Great Gatsby, starring Leonardo Di Caprio and Tobey Maguire, opened the 2013 Cannes film festival and went on to become a world-wide box-office success. Pearce is currently developing a number of projects, including Will, a television series he has created about young William Shakespeare, The Maid an epic television series about Joan of Arc, and a live, musical production of Strictly Ballroom.
