The Graphic Collection of the Kunsthalle Mannheim is one of the first systematic collections of modern art worldwide. Since its founding in 1911, the focal points--expressionism, new objectivity, and works on paper by sculptors--have been consistently expanded upon, parallel with the respective current artistic developments. Despite great losses through confiscations by the National Socialists, a high-quality and multifaceted group of works has remained intact. With nearly 500 illustrations, this catalogue presents a select cross-section of this unique collection.

Christine Hopfengart has worked in various museums, including the National Museums in Berlin, is the former deputy director of the Kunsthalle Nurnberg, and is a former curator of the Kunsthalle Bremen. In 2001 she was appointed as head of the Paul Klee Foundation in Bern, where she worked as a curator for the exhibition projects and artists' archives since 2005. Ulrike Lorenz is a former director of the Kunstsammlung Gera and the Otto Dix House, and is currently director of the Kunsthalle Mannheim, Germany.
