Overview

STREETS & SAN is a collection rooted in family set mostly on the streets of Chicago. As the son of Irish immigrant parents, in a household marked by alcoholism and violence yet suffused with love, the author confronts issues of identity, displacement, forgiveness and home. In struggling to label the conflicting feelings within his own personal history, he tries to become a caring parent to his own children, discovering along the way the saving power of language and art.

Author Information

John S. O'Connor is a public school teacher and a writer from Chicago. Previous books include two books on the teaching of writing (Wordplaygrounds; and This Time It's Personal) a chapbook of poems called Rooting; and three books of haiku, most recently Natural Consequences, a winner of the annual Brooks Books chapbook contest. His poems have appeared in places such as Bennington Review, The Cortland Review, Poetry East and Rhino.
