Reviews

The author of this impressively detailed tome is already known for his other Crécy titles - Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker and Spyflights and Overflights among others - and he's lost none of his ability to present precisely detailed text, previously unpublished images, and operational charts, tables and maps. No details have been left out of the 46 years covering SAC operations, with types including the host of C-135 variants that deployed to the UK, along with SR-71s, FB-111As, B-1Bs and, of course, B-52s. Images from private and official collections support the text and deployment tables, and many of the colour photographs are in print for the first time. The countless squadrons involved in the annual rotational deployments, duration of the exercises and the types involved are also detailed.Rather than simply focusing on the bombers, chapters cover supporting types, such as the tankers, reconnaissance platforms, fighters and liaison aircraft. This book is a fascinating stroll through aviation history when the UK was an 'unsinkable aircraft carrier' for the USAF. Thoroughly recommended. -- Glenn Sands * AirForces Monthly *
