OverviewThe peace talks were not progressing well, and in early 1972 a stepped up naval air offensive was ordered by President Nixon in order to further fortify the DMZ (demilitarized zone) between North and South Vietnam. This offensive was to be part of an operation known as Linebacker , and it was hoped that the additional air power would have an impact. WESTPAC '72 describes true accounts of the author's experiences on the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk (CVA-63) during its Western Pacific deployment to Vietnam in that year. Specifically, it describes a racial incident that ultimately arose after months of internal conflict created by an oblivious leadership that did not address it. This lack of leadership created an atmosphere of mistrust and often fear among the crew. It ultimately played a significant role in the outcome of the marginally successful mission.
