OverviewHamilton Hume (19 June 1797 - 19 April 1873) was an early explorer of the present-day Australian states of New South Wales and Victoria. In 1824, along with William Hovell, Hume participated in an expedition that first took an overland route from Sydney to Port Phillip (near the site of present-day Melbourne). This book is the story of a man who played a vital part in Australia's history - a man who is not nearly as well knows as the highway which follows his tracks and bears his name. Hamilton Hume was one of the first white children born in Australia - a Currency Lad. He became the first man to understand and appreciate the new land and its strange inhabitants. Hamilton Hume - the brave, tireless, colorful but naive bushman - has never received recognition due to him for his part in changing the attitude to inland Australia and it's potential.
