Stories from the Sea: Tales of Adventure from Around the World

Overview

This beautiful hardback anthology draws together 15 classic sea stories from around the world, as retold by poet and children's author Corinna Keefe and brought to life in full-color by multi-award-winning illustrator Khoa Le. Weigh anchor and prepare for the voyage of a lifetime with this spectacular collection of sea stories taken from myths, folklore and oral histories from all over the world. Young readers can thrill to the epic voyages of the trickster Maui, who made the islands of Polynesia; swim with dragons alongside China's Lin Moniang; and enjoy the mischievous antics of the Klabautermann, a mischievous German sea-goblin. Pirates, mermaids, ghost ships and more can be found inside. Includes: - The Selkie (Scotland) - Maui Goes Fishing (Oceania) - Jiaoren's Tears of Pearl (China) - The Octopus of Tellaro (Italy) - Sinbad the Sailor (Persia) - The Mermaid Melusine (North European) - Hercules in Atlantis (Catalan version) - How Lin Moniang Saved Her Brother (China) - How the Sea Hid the Sun (Hittite) - How the Sea Became Salt (Norse) - Mother Carey (Northern Europe) - Nammu, the Goddess of Water (Mesopotamia) - Klabautermann (Northern Europe) - The Giant Whale Hafgufa (Norway/Iceland) - Jason and the Argonauts (Greece) One thing that all the stories have in common is the power of the sea. Whether it takes the form of huge waves, apocalyptic storms, or even sea monsters, the sea is more powerful than humans or gods. Not even Maui and his magic fishhook can outrun the waves. Full of mystery and magic, epic adventure, and terrible danger, these stories help us understand just how powerful and wonderful the oceans are, and how important they are in the story of humanity. Ideal for children aged 8+.
