A book whose honesty and evocation of youth is a triumph. -- New York Times Robert Fass's new performance of writer Frank Conroy's 1967 memoir has the feel of classic storytelling in the 1930s and '40s. It's a perfect match for the stories unfolding here. -- AudioFile The tribulations of an American youth during the Thirties and Forties...He undergoes the traditional rite de passage of disrupted family life, boyhood miseries and marvels, mixed-up schooling, and contrasted adventures in Florida, New York, and Europe. A mirror of growing up, of emotional survival, upsettingly reflective of us all. -- Kirkus Reviews (starred review)
