OverviewIt was my privilege to serve my country as a Naval Officer, privileged because I live in a country with freedoms and opportunities worth defending, because I fulfilled a childhood dream of going to sea, and because I was treated to more learning, living, and responsibility than in any other comparable period of my life. Most friends, family, and associates know that I am prone to illustrate points with sea stories and sons Will and Jon have urged (badgered?) me to put them in writing, so I have. The result has been a surprise, even to me, as I examined those most formative years of my life. I have been gratified by the responses of friends and family to Still a Sailor, and further surprised by the great variety of impressions those readers have taken away from it, some of which even I had not anticipated. The stories in Still a Sailor are told in the context of two years on the USS Brownson (DD868) during which she steamed perhaps 100,000 miles, visited 20 countries, and 5 continents, and crossed the line at 53 04 E. Some are humorous, some poignant, some lessons learned the hard way, and a couple just good yarns. It is my further privilege to be able to share them with you.
