Reviews

Steve the Alien by G. Brian Benson begins with a boy named Zeke who, while walking along on a snowy winter's day, hears a sound in the sky. Zeke soon discovers that a spaceship is landing right near him. His mind is racing with all kinds of thoughts and ideas about what could be happening at any moment. When a little green creature emerges and speaks to Zeke, Zeke is surprised that the alien speaks English. His name is Steve and he tells Zeke that he is on a scavenger hunt. A contest to see who can find and bring back the best pair of shoes. Steve tells Zeke that he learned to speak his language at school, and that is where he got his license to fly. He answers Zeke's questions about how many planets he has visited, and how far he has flown. G. Brian Benson does a superb job of bringing this short story to life, especially with the help of Paul Hernandez, whose wonderfully bright and colorful illustrations jump right off the pages. The way this story is presented, I could actually visualize a teacher, parent, or librarian reading this book to a group of children, showing them the vibrant pictures as each page is turned. I also thought it was really cool that the story was written in verse, which reminded me instantly of Dr. Seuss. Steve the Alien is a wonderfully put together package of words and pictures that hit a home run with me. Well done!-Reviewed by Stephen Fisher for Readers' Favorite------------I love books that have rhyming words because I really believe there is great benefit in rhymes when raising readers. Plus, rhyming is FUN not just for the listener, but also for parents who are reading aloud. When I was approached to review Steve the Alien, I was excited. The idea of a funny looking alien coming to earth is very appealing to my kids. Especially to my son who thinks that all things Outer Space related is AWESOME. (We read several alien books during our #BookReviewMamaSpaceCamp). Then I realized Steve the Alien is also rhyming book, that only added to my excitement.Steve the Alien by G. Brian Benson is a delightful book about a little boy who meets an alien (Steve) on the way to school. He isn't sure if people will believe this out-of-this-world encounter. Who would blame a young kid for being unsure about telling his tale? But, Steve the Alien isn't concerned with whether or not people believe he is an alien. Steve is on a mission and he needs some human help. There is such a wave of kindness in this book. It's all about being open to meeting new people even if you are unsure of the initial encounter. I saw my kids looking over after we read it aloud. That's always a good sign to me when my kids go back to the book after we've read it together. I think this would be a wonderful book to give as a gift to outer space fanatic in your life. It would also be a great book to give for an early reader.Book Review Mama------------------Steve the Alien is a BLAST! It's a wonderful story, filled with imagination and out of this world illustrations. A must have for any child who enjoys making new friends, and imagining far off worlds.Adam T. Newman Award-winning children's author of How to Catch a Cold------------------
