She specializes in arts in education. She began her career as a public school teacher, a role in which she served for 15 years. Her central research focuses on STEAM education, art infusion, and forest schools. Nancy Walkup has been the editor of SchoolArts, a magazine for art educators published since 1901, since 2005. She was also a contributing author, along with Marilyn Stewart, Eldon Katter, and Laura Chapman, for the first edition of Explorations in Art, Davis Publications's elementary textbook series.
