Reviews

Posing a series of questions that young children might ask about coronavirus, this Sesame Street book provides matter-of-fact answers that address common concerns and foster a positive outlook, while acknowledging that changes in routine can be difficult. The questions address topics such as what coronavirus looks like, who is helping with this disease, and how people can stay healthy. Written in short sentences, the answers are concise, straightforward, and supportive. On a page discussing 'who is helping, ' kids are encouraged to draw pictures for 'Everyday Heroes, ' such as grocery store workers and mail carriers. A typical double-page spread includes two colorful photos that might feature children, parents, and/or doctors and nurses on the job, along with an inserted image of a familiar Sesame Street Muppet, who comments on the topic at hand in a speech balloon. Within a discussion of connecting with friends when playdates are not an option, Snuffleupagus adds, 'I call my friend Bird and we sing songs together.' The combination of facts and familiar characters makes this a reassuring choice for young children.--Booklist -- Journal (2/15/2021 12:00:00 AM) This colorful picture book provides an opportunity to discuss and clarify some of the big issues surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. The text features an introduction, three brief chapters, a question and answer section, and coping strategies. There are many familiar Sesame Street characters that are depicted wearing face masks. Photos include BIPOC children and adults. A glossary, a bibliography, a link to an online resource, and an index are also included. This title is a good preliminary resource for young children to learn about the coronavirus and understand the impact it could have on their family. The Sesame Street characters can help to ease fears and calm anxieties. VERDICT A highly topical book that may offer families a starting point for discussing COVID-19 with young children.--School Library Journal -- Journal (1/1/2021 12:00:00 AM)

Author Information

Mary Lindeen has been interested in learning about the world around her since she was a little girl growing up on a farm in Iowa. She thought learning new things was so much fun that she became an elementary school teacher. She loved sharing books with her students and wanted to know more about how those books were made, so she became an editor. Now she reads, writes, and edits children's books and still loves learning new things. She and her son live in Minnesota and enjoy traveling together whenever and wherever they can, including making frequent trips back to that farm in Iowa.
