Reviews

Bournes' second volume of poetry exhibits his characteristic dexterity with language, devastating wit, and heart for justice. This round, though, he adds an extra, courageous dose of vulnerable sincerity. His explorations of the challenges of romance and trying to make ends meet as an artist are compelling and inspiring. He invites his audience to peek behind the veils of cultural artifacts to better understand the relationships between love, creativity and living an authentic life in what he aptly calls ""this hellscape ... bursting with hope."" Throughout this collection, he remains clear-headed about the tough realities of making ends meet in our times, such as when he remarks: ""Being in love is expensive/Being alive is expensive."" In the end, though, he points toward hope and ultimately proves to be an effective champion of love, in the broadest sense of the word. -Jeff Mallinson, D.Phil., historian of religion, podcaster and author
