OverviewProvides an account of the progress made in the latter half of the 20th century in the application of statistical models to the decay of excited atomic nuclei produced in heavy ion collision. The first chapter provides a brief historical development of the subject (dating back to Weisskopf in 1937). The second chapter gives a basic introduction to those aspects of equilibrium statistical mechanics relevant for the study of nuclear decay. The bulk of the text is then devoted to the description of nuclear decay processes which occur in heavy ion collision: two chapters on Hasler Feshbach theory and binary sequential decay, followed by three chapters on multifragmentation, and a final chapter on vaporization. The book should be useful for researchers and postgraduate students in nuclear physics.
