Author Information

Andrey Gretchev was born in Poltava, Ukraine in 1903 to a Russian family. During the Bolshevik revolution, he fled with his family and settled in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. After WW2, Tito and Stalin had a disagreement and white Russians were told to leave the country or risk imprisonment should the Soviet Union take over by force. Andrey, with his family crossed the border into Italy and eventually received permission to immigrate to Canada in 1952. There he worked for various engineering companies designing bridges, factories, and apartment buildings. During the last years of his life, he wrote this book in the hope of transferring knowledge to the younger generation. He died in 1975 but left this manuscript to his sons. With modern computers and the Internet, his work was finally translated from Serbian to English and published here.
