She is an expert in the study of emotions and their relation to facial expressions, a universal system of signals which reflect the moment-to-moment fluctuations in a person's emotional state. Whiteley completed her B.A. with a triple major in psychology, sociology, and anthropology from Brooklyn College in 2005, where she graduated summa cum laude. She completed her M.S. (2006) and Ph.D. (2010) in psychology from Yale University. She conducted seminal research on the specific biological correlations of specific emotions, attempting to demonstrate the universality and discreteness of emotions in a Darwinian approach.
