Overview

From the winner of the Ampersand Prize comes this smart, swoony LGBTQ YA novel about a teenage band on the way to the top – so long as they can hold it together.   Liliana’s hitting all the wrong notes. She’s a sixteen-year-old exchange student with a secret crush on Carter, her new band’s smoking hot guitarist – but she’s also got a girlfriend back home.   So when she writes a song about him and it lands the band a record deal, she quickly realises she’s in hot water.   Soon, Liliana will have to choose – between an alluring boy and the girl she left behind, between love and lust, and between the fame that beckons and staying true to the music that’s in her heart.   With shades of hit TV series Nashville, the musical passion of Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist and the band drama of Fleetwood Mac, this brilliant own-voices YA debut is perfect for music lovers everywhere.

Reviews

'Liliana Donadi has a lot to be grateful for: a coveted spot at a British music academy, loving family and friends, and a devoted girlfriend back in Sydney. But when opportunity comes knocking, she is forced to make some sacrifices. How much is she prepared to risk to go all the way to the top? Stars Like Us is a heady tale of fame and glory - its perks, its pleasures and its price. This girl-leaves-girl-for-boy-only-to-develop-feelings-for-a-different-girl narrative was a whirlwind romance for me. Frances Chapman has created an addictive story about what really happens when all your dreams come true.' - Erin Gough 'A whirlwind modern fairytale for anyone who has dreamed of music, romance, and transforming from a fan to a rockstar.' - Melissa Keil 'This book had my heart from the very first song lyric and Frances Chapman didn't put a foot wrong from there. Liliana is a wonderfully messy and charming lead, and the love triangle at the heart of this book hits all the right notes. Stars Like Us is a truly pitch perfect queer YA novel and the Ampersand Prize has once again brought us a fresh, funny and clever new #LoveOzYA voice.' - Amelia Lush, Sydney Writers' Festival 'I loved this quirky and fun novel, which combines a modern edge, real heart and vintage rock cool. Stars Like Us balances the tensions of teenage relationships and the fantasy backdrop of stardom in a way that feels authentic. I'll be keeping an eye out for whatever Frances Chapman writes next!' - Sarah Young, Dymocks George Street 'I devoured Stars Like Us. It's perfect for anyone dreaming of running away and becoming a star, it's super fast paced with just the right amount of crazy drama making it accessible to teens that don't read as much.' - Genevieve Kruyssen, Where The Wild Things Are 'I positively inhaled this absolute gem of a novel. It has everything I love about YA romance: snark, sass and secret love triangles. Frances Chapman is a talent to watch.' -Hannah Gardiner, Berkelouw Books
